In a historic decision, the central government has granted classical language status to Marathi, fulfilling a long-standing demand by the people of Maharashtra. This announcement was made by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, stating that Marathi, along with Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali, has now joined the prestigious list of classical languages in India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate the Marathi language and its speakers. “Marathi is the pride of India. Congratulations to this unique language for achieving the status of a classical language,” Modi posted, highlighting the cultural significance of Marathi. He expressed hope that this recognition will inspire more people to learn and appreciate the language, which has contributed immensely to India’s heritage.
The Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, also expressed his joy, stating, “Today is a historic day in the history of Maymarathi!” His words echo the sentiments of countless Marathi speakers who have fought for decades to achieve this honor for their beloved language.
The Significance of Classical Language Status
The status of a classical language is not just symbolic but represents the richness and depth of the language’s history and cultural contributions. Marathi is the seventh language to be given this recognition, joining Tamil, Sanskrit, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, and Odia. For Marathi speakers, this honor is a testament to the language’s longstanding literary tradition, historical importance, and ongoing cultural relevance.
Prime Minister Modi’s remarks reinforce the idea that this recognition is not just for the language, but for the people who have kept it alive and thriving for centuries. As Marathi gains this elite status, it joins the ranks of India’s most revered languages, ensuring its preservation and continued growth for future generations.
