New Delhi: The automobile world has lost one of its most influential leaders, Osamu Suzuki, at the age of 94. A visionary who transformed the Indian automobile industry, Suzuki was battling lymphoma, a type of cancer, before he breathed his last on Wednesday, December 25. Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan announced the heartbreaking news.
Osamu Suzuki, the Honorary Chairman and Director of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, played a pivotal role in making cars affordable and accessible to Indian families, reshaping the nation’s automotive industry.
The Journey of Maruti Suzuki Under Osamu Suzuki
In 1981, Suzuki made a historic decision to partner with the Indian government to form Maruti Udyog Limited. At the time, India was a closed economy governed by a strict license system. His bold move was the catalyst for the modernization of the Indian automobile sector.
Under his leadership, Maruti Suzuki introduced iconic models like the Maruti 800, a car that became synonymous with affordability, reliability, and the aspirations of the middle class.
In 2007, after the Indian government decided to exit Suzuki Motor Corporation, Maruti Udyog Limited was rebranded as Maruti Suzuki India Limited, solidifying its position as a market leader.
Chairman of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, R.C. Bhargava, expressed his grief, stating, “Without Suzuki’s vision, willingness to take risks, and immense abilities as a teacher, the Indian automotive industry would not have achieved its current stature.”
Tributes Pour In
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the legendary figure through a heartfelt tweet:
“Deeply saddened by the passing of #OsamuSuzuki, a legendary figure in the global automotive industry. He had a profound affection for India, and his collaboration with Maruti revolutionized the Indian automobile market.”
Suzuki’s relationship with India extended beyond business. His affection for the country and its people was reflected in his strategic investments and long-term vision for Maruti Suzuki.
A Life Dedicated to Innovation
Born on January 30, 1930, in Gero, Japan, Osamu Suzuki graduated with a law degree from Chuo University. He joined Suzuki Motor Corporation (then Suzuki Motor Company Limited) in April 1958 and swiftly climbed the corporate ladder. By 1967, he was appointed Director and Managing Director.
Suzuki’s leadership marked a new era for the company. His ability to innovate and adapt to the needs of different markets was a hallmark of his career.
A Lasting Legacy
Osamu Suzuki’s contributions to the global and Indian automobile industry are unparalleled. He bridged two countries—India and Japan—through his vision and strategic foresight, creating opportunities and transforming dreams into reality. His legacy lives on in every Maruti Suzuki car on Indian roads, a testament to his dedication to empowering the middle class.
