Pune Reports Another GBS Death as Total Cases Rise to 192

A 37-year-old man from Bibvewadi succumbs to Guillain-Barré Syndrome; total deaths in Maharashtra reach seven

Pune: The city of Pune has reported another death due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), raising concerns over the increasing number of cases in Maharashtra. A 37-year-old man from Upper Indiranagar, Bibvewadi, succumbed to the disease at Kamala Nehru Hospital on Sunday night (9th February). With this, the total number of GBS-related deaths in the state has risen to seven.

According to health department reports, the total count of GBS patients in Maharashtra has now reached 192. Among them, 167 patients have been officially diagnosed with the syndrome.

Case Details of the Deceased Patient

The deceased patient, who worked as a driver, first experienced symptoms of weakness on January 31. Initially, he sought treatment at Bharti Hospital in Pune, but on February 1, his relatives moved him to Nipani for further care. As his condition did not improve, he was shifted to Bharti Hospital in Sangli. When his health deteriorated further, he was transferred to Kamala Nehru Hospital in Pune on February 5, where he ultimately passed away during treatment on Sunday.

Rising GBS Cases in Pune

The incidence of Guillain-Barré Syndrome in Pune continues to rise alarmingly. The city and its surrounding regions have reported a surge in cases:

  • Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) region: 39 cases
  • 91 villages recently included in PMC: 91 cases
  • Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) region: 29 cases
  • Pune Rural: 25 cases
  • Other districts in Maharashtra: 8 cases

Out of the total 192 patients, 48 are currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while 21 are on ventilator support. However, 91 patients have successfully recovered and been discharged.

The affected patients fall into various age groups, with the highest number reported in the 20–29 age bracket:
