Sydney, January 3, 2025 – The fifth and final Test between India and Australia at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground began with high anticipation but turned disappointing for Team India. Under the leadership of stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah, India managed only 185 runs in their first innings, putting Australia in the driver’s seat at the end of Day 1.
India’s Struggles with the Bat
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, India’s top-order failed to provide a solid start. Regular skipper Rohit Sharma was rested due to a prolonged slump in form, and young Shubman Gill was brought into the playing XI. However, Gill failed to capitalize on the opportunity, scoring just 20 runs with two boundaries.
The Indian innings revolved around Rishabh Pant, who top-scored with a resilient 40 off 62 balls, including three boundaries and a six. However, the lack of support from the other end proved costly as wickets fell at regular intervals.
Australian Bowlers Dominate
Australia’s bowling attack was relentless, with Scott Boland emerging as the star performer. Boland took 4 wickets, dismantling India’s batting lineup with precision. Mitchell Starc provided excellent support, claiming 3 wickets, while skipper Pat Cummins and spinner Nathan Lyon took 2 and 1 wickets, respectively.
Australia Begins Chase
In response, Australia started their innings confidently, reaching 9/1 in 3 overs before stumps. Jasprit Bumrah provided a glimmer of hope for India by dismissing opener David Warner early. Australia trails by 176 runs, with Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne at the crease.
