Ashwin's Six-Wicket Haul and Jadeja's All-Round Performance Lead India to Victory Over Bangladesh

Chennai : India defeated Bangladesh by a comprehensive margin of 280 runs on Day 4 of the first Test, taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The match, held at Chepauk, showcased India’s dominance, particularly on Day 4 when Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja dismantled Bangladesh’s batting lineup.

Ashwin, who went wicketless in the first innings, came back stronger in the second, claiming an impressive 6/88. Jadeja was equally effective, picking up 3/58, taking his career Test wickets to 299. India wrapped up Bangladesh’s innings for 234 runs, sealing the match.

India had earlier recovered from a shaky start on Day 1, being reduced to 144/6, thanks to a 199-run partnership between Ashwin and Jadeja that helped India reach a solid total of 376. Jasprit Bumrah led India’s bowling attack, dismissing Bangladesh for just 149 in their first innings.

However, India opted not to enforce the follow-on, with Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant putting up a commanding partnership of 167 runs for the fourth wicket in the second innings. Pant reached a century off 124 balls, while Gill notched his fifth Test hundred, setting up a declaration at 287/4.

On the final day, Bangladesh put up a fight with skipper Najmul Shanto scoring 82, but once Ashwin was brought into the attack after the drinks break, wickets began to tumble. India’s disciplined bowling performance, coupled with Ashwin’s 37th five-wicket haul, ensured a swift end to Bangladesh’s resistance. The second Test is set to take place in Kanpur starting on September 27, where India will look to complete a series sweep.
