Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Condemns YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia’s Remarks; NHRC Intervenes

Mumbai: A Growing Social Media Controversy

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has strongly criticized popular YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, widely known as ‘Beer Biceps,’ for his inappropriate remarks made during a recent episode of Samay Raina’s show, India’s Got Latent. The CM asserted that while freedom of speech is a fundamental right, it must not infringe upon societal norms and values. His statement came amid growing outrage on social media and legal action initiated against the content creator.

NHRC Directs YouTube to Remove Controversial Video

In response to the controversy, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has stepped in, urging YouTube to take immediate action by removing the contentious video. NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo addressed a letter to YouTube’s Head of Public Policy, Mira Chatt, directing the removal of the video and submission of relevant details to law enforcement authorities. The commission has mandated a report on the matter within ten days.

Complaint Filed Against Allahbadia and Others

A formal complaint has been lodged against YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, social media influencer Apoorva Makhija, comedian and show host Samay Raina, along with the event organizers. The complaint cites offensive and controversial remarks made on the show, which many viewers found inappropriate and disrespectful.

CM Fadnavis: ‘There is Freedom of Speech, But…’

Speaking on the controversy, CM Devendra Fadnavis remarked, “I have heard about the issue, though I have not seen the video yet. The remarks made on the show have been taken in a wrong way. While everyone has the right to freedom of speech, it must not come at the cost of hurting others or violating social norms. Action should be taken against such behavior.”

Shiv Sena Warns YouTuber Over Remarks

Adding fuel to the controversy, Shiv Sena has also issued a stern warning to Ranveer Allahbadia, cautioning against the misuse of free speech. Party leader Raju Waghmare stated, “Shiv Sena wants to warn this YouTuber not to insult our mothers and sisters. Freedom of expression should not be misused in this manner. If he continues, we will take legal action to stop him.”

What Sparked the Controversy?

The issue originated from an episode of India’s Got Latent, featuring a panel of popular content creators including Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, Ranveer Allahbadia, and Apoorva Makhija (The Rebel Kid), hosted by comedian Samay Raina. During the episode, Allahbadia posed an inappropriate question to a contestant, triggering a wave of criticism and backlash on social media.

Social Media Backlash and Apology

Following the backlash, Ranveer Allahbadia issued a public apology for his remarks. However, this has done little to quell the controversy, with demands for stricter regulation of online content and accountability for influencers growing louder.

NHRC’s Action Plan

The NHRC has taken a firm stance, requiring YouTube to comply with their directive and cooperate with law enforcement. The letter explicitly states that YouTube must remove the controversial content and share details with the police for further action.

The Broader Debate on Free Speech and Responsibility

This controversy has reignited the debate on the limits of free speech in India, especially on digital platforms. While some argue that creative freedom should be protected, others emphasize the need for responsibility and ethical considerations in content creation.
