Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha Elections 2024: Voting on November 20, Results on November 23
The Election Commission of India has officially announced the dates for the highly anticipated Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha Elections 2024. Voting for the assembly elections will be held in a single phase on November 20, with the results being declared just three days later on November 23. This announcement was made during a press conference at the Kendriya Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi, providing clarity on the timeline for the elections that will determine the next state government.
The current term of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is set to end on November 26, making this election crucial for the state’s political landscape. The elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand will follow the Central Election Commission’s guidelines to ensure smooth and transparent voting processes across the states.
Over 9.63 Crore Voters to Cast Their Vote
Maharashtra is home to an impressive 9.63 crore registered voters, with 20.93 lakh new voters set to cast their ballots for the first time. The electorate is a balanced mix, with 4.97 crore male voters and 4.66 crore female voters. Additionally, there are 56,997 third-gender voters and a substantial number of disabled voters, estimated at 6.32 lakh.
Youth participation in this election will also be notable, with over 1.85 crore youth voters playing a critical role in determining the election outcome. Senior citizens will also receive special provisions, as voters above the age of 85 years, totaling 12.48 lakh, can cast their votes from the comfort of their homes after filling out a form provided by the Election Commission.
The state also has 49,000 centenarian voters—people who have crossed the age of 100—who will participate in this significant democratic exercise.
Polling Stations Across Maharashtra: Extensive Setup for Smooth Voting
The Election Commission has set up 1 lakh 186 polling stations across Maharashtra to ensure that voting is accessible to all eligible citizens. Out of these, 42,604 polling stations are located in urban areas, while 57,582 polling stations will cater to rural voters. On average, each polling station will handle about 960 voters.
To encourage the participation of women and youth, 350 polling stations will be managed by young officers, and several polling centers will have women officers managing the process to ensure a secure and comfortable environment for women voters.
Suvidha Portal: Ensuring Transparency and Quick Response
In an effort to maintain transparency and accountability during the elections, the Election Commission has launched the Suvidha Portal, an app that allows voters to report any issues they encounter during the voting process. From delayed polling to any untoward incidents at polling stations, voters can upload photos and submit complaints via the app. Election officials have assured that in cases of complaints, the Election Commission team will respond within 90 minutes.
This tech-driven approach underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and efficient voting process, addressing problems promptly, and maintaining the integrity of the elections.
A Closer Look at the Voter Demographics
With a total of 288 assembly constituencies up for election, Maharashtra’s voter demographics paint an interesting picture. The number of voters continues to grow, with 19.48 lakh first-time voters marking their debut in the democratic process this year. Additionally, the state has seen a significant increase in female voters, with 10.77 lakh more women registered to vote in this election compared to previous years.
The Election Commission’s focus on making voting accessible to all, including senior citizens and disabled individuals, is a reflection of the inclusive approach to this year’s election. Special provisions for those aged 85 and above, as well as disabled voters, ensure that every citizen has the opportunity to exercise their right to vote.
Maharashtra Gears Up for a Crucial Election
The Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha Elections 2024 are shaping up to be a pivotal moment in the state’s political history. With over 9 crore voters eligible to cast their vote and a robust infrastructure in place to support the election process, all eyes will be on the state as it heads to the polls on November 20.
As political parties gear up for what promises to be a fiercely contested election, the Election Commission’s transparent and tech-enabled approach, coupled with extensive voter outreach, ensures that this year’s assembly elections will be a testament to India’s vibrant democratic process.
Voters are encouraged to exercise their right to vote and take advantage of the various facilities provided to ensure their participation in this essential democratic exercise.
