Matthew Breetzke Breaks ODI Debut World Record as South Africa Posts 304 Against New Zealand

South Africa's Matthew Breetzke smashes a record 150 on his ODI debut, propelling a depleted Proteas squad to a competitive 304 against New Zealand in the tri-series opener.

Matthew Breetzke Shatters World Record on ODI Debut as Depleted South Africa Posts 304 Against New Zealand

South Africa’s Matthew Breetzke made history on Monday, February 10, in Lahore, becoming the first cricketer to score 150 on ODI debut as the Proteas put up a formidable 304 runs against New Zealand in the tri-series opener. Despite missing key players due to the SA20 knockouts, the South African side delivered a competitive performance, with Breetzke’s fireworks leading the charge at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Proteas Hand Four Debuts in Depleted XI

Fielding a significantly altered XI due to the unavailability of several first-choice players, South Africa gave four players their maiden ODI caps—a rare occurrence in modern cricket. However, Breetzke, with his experience from 58 List-A matches and a promising IPL contract with the Lucknow Super Giants, made the most of his opportunity.

On a relatively flat wicket, Breetzke began cautiously, but once settled, he took full control of the innings. After reaching his maiden international century, the right-hander accelerated dramatically, with his last 50 runs coming off just 19 deliveries. His explosive batting display saw him surpass Desmond Haynes’ 47-year-old record (148 runs) for the highest individual score on ODI debut.

Top ODI Debut Scores in History

Proteas’ Middle Order Supports Strong Start

With Breetzke leading the charge, South Africa was cruising at one stage, especially during a blistering five-over period where they amassed 66 runs. However, once Breetzke departed after his 150, New Zealand regained control and tightened the screws in the final overs.

Wiaan Mulder contributed a vital 64 runs to help South Africa cross the 300-run mark. However, given that New Zealand successfully chased 330 runs in their previous game against Pakistan at the same venue, the contest remains finely balanced.

What’s Next for Breetzke?

Despite his record-breaking performance, Breetzke’s place in the squad remains uncertain, as South Africa’s first-choice players are set to return for the next match on February 12. Will his heroics be enough to secure a long-term spot in the Proteas’ setup, possibly even for the upcoming Champions Trophy?

With South Africa posting 304, the onus now shifts to New Zealand’s batting lineup. Can the Black Caps chase down another big total, or will Breetzke’s knock prove to be the match-winning effort? Cricket fans around the world eagerly await the second innings.
