Pune – In a significant move, Microsoft India has acquired 16.4 acres of land in Pune’s Hinjewadi IT Park from Indo Global Infotech City Company. The transaction, valued at Rs 520 crore, marks a major investment in the region, which is already a hub for the country’s booming tech industry.
This isn’t Microsoft’s first move in Pune; two years ago, the tech giant purchased 25 acres of land in Pimpri-Chinchwad to establish a data center. Although the company has yet to disclose its plans for the newly acquired land, expectations are high that the investment will lead to massive employment opportunities and further solidify Pune’s position as an IT powerhouse.
A Boost for Local Infrastructure
Hinjewadi IT Park, part of the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, hosts leading tech firms such as Infosys, Wipro, and Cognizant. However, concerns about inadequate infrastructure and the exodus of 37 companies in the past decade had cast a shadow over the park’s future. Microsoft’s investment is seen as a vote of confidence, likely to attract more businesses to the area.
Microsoft’s purchase does not fall under the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), as the land acquired is privately owned. However, this investment follows a series of similar moves by Microsoft in India, including the acquisition of 48 acres of land in Hyderabad for Rs 267 crore earlier this year.
Microsoft already operates data centers in Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Noida, employing a total of 23,000 people in the country. With Hinjewadi now part of Microsoft’s expanding footprint in India, the company’s role in shaping the future of the country’s IT landscape continues to grow.
