Cricket: Morne Morkel appointed India men’s bowling coach
Morne Morkel, the former South African fast bowler, has been appointed as the new bowling coach for the India men’s cricket team. Morne Morkel is a former South African cricketer who played as a fast bowler for the South African national team. Born on October 6, 1984, in Vereeniging, South Africa, Morkel was known for his height, pace, and ability to extract bounce from the pitch. He played a key role in South Africa’s bowling attack during his international career, which spanned from 2006 to 2018.
The announcement was confirmed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah. Morkel, who has had an illustrious international career with 544 wickets across formats, was the top choice of the newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir, with whom he previously worked at the IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants.
Morkel will take over from Paras Mhambrey and is set to begin his tenure with India’s Test series against Bangladesh, starting in September 2024.
His contract extends until the 2027 ODI World Cup. His appointment is particularly strategic given India’s upcoming challenging series, including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and a Test series in England.
