NCP Leader Baba Siddique Shot Dead in Bandra: Two Arrested, Investigation Underway

Mumbai – NCP leader and former state minister Baba Siddique was tragically shot dead on Saturday night in an incident that has shocked the city. The firing took place outside the public relations office of Zeeshan Siddique, MLA and son of Baba Siddique, in Bandra West around 9:30 PM. Siddique was rushed to Lilavati Hospital immediately following the attack, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

The police have arrested two suspects in connection with the assassination, identified as Colonel Singh and Dharmaraj Kashyap, while a third suspect remains at large. The authorities have expressed the possibility that the firing might be related to a Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) project.

Details of the Shooting Incident

On the night of Dussehra, a large crowd gathered near the Kherwadi Signal for the immersion procession of local deities, providing a cover for the attack. Baba Siddique, aged 66, was walking towards his office when he was shot at close range by three assailants. Six rounds were fired, with three bullets fatally hitting Siddique in the chest. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing Siddique collapse instantly.

His car, which was parked nearby, was also damaged by stray bullets. Police found additional bullet cartridges at the scene. Despite Y-level security being assigned to Siddique only 15 days prior, the assailants managed to carry out the attack, raising questions about security lapses.

Aftermath of the Attack

As news of the shooting spread, Baba Siddique’s supporters and followers quickly gathered outside Lilavati Hospital, where an air of shock and grief filled the atmosphere. The sudden and brutal killing of the former minister has sent ripples through the city’s political circles.

Who Was Baba Siddique?

Ziauddin “Baba” Siddique was a seasoned politician who began his career with the Congress Party in 1977. Over the years, he held various influential positions, including President of the Mumbai Youth Congress and corporator of Mumbai Mahanagara Palika. He represented the Bandra West Assembly Constituency for three consecutive terms from 1999 to 2009. During his tenure, Siddique served as Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies and Labor from 2004 to 2008.

He was also appointed Chairman of MHADA Mumbai Board by the Maharashtra Government between 2000 and 2004. Known for his active involvement in public welfare, Baba Siddique’s death has left a void in Mumbai’s political landscape.

Police Investigation Underway

Mumbai Police are actively investigating the case, questioning the detained suspects while pursuing the third person involved. Sources suggest that the motive may be linked to a dispute over SRA projects, although further details are awaited. A police official stated, “We are following up on leads and are confident of apprehending the absconding suspect soon.”

This tragic event has raised serious concerns about the safety of political figures in Mumbai and is expected to spark widespread discussions on security protocols.

A City in Mourning

Baba Siddique’s passing marks the end of a long and distinguished political career. His legacy in Bandra West and beyond will be remembered, but the circumstances of his death have left many questioning the safety of public figures in a city where political violence continues to pose a significant threat.

Authorities have assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to bring justice to Siddique and his family.
