India Celebrates as Nishad Kumar and Preethi Pal Shine with Silver and Bronze Medals at the Paris Paralympics

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his admiration and congratulations to Indian para-athletes Nishad Kumar and Preethi Pal, who brought pride to the nation by securing silver and bronze medals, respectively, at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Nishad Kumar, competing in the men’s high jump T47 category, soared to a season-best performance with a leap of 2.04 meters, earning him a silver medal. This marks his second consecutive Paralympic silver, following his success at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

Preethi Pal, a trailblazer in Indian athletics, made history by winning India’s first-ever bronze in the women’s 200m event at the Paris Paralympics. The 23-year-old from Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, clocked a personal-best time of 30.01 seconds to secure her place on the podium. This achievement adds to her earlier bronze in the 100m event, making her the first Indian female para-athlete to win two medals in a single Paralympics.

PM Modi expressed his pride in these athletes through separate X posts, calling Preethi Pal’s win a “historic achievement” and stating that “India is elated” with Nishad Kumar’s performance. The Prime Minister highlighted their dedication and perseverance, labeling them as inspirations for the nation.

India’s medal tally at the 2024 Paris Paralympics now stands at seven, comprising one gold, two silvers, and four bronzes, underscoring the nation’s growing prowess in para-sports on the global stage.
