Pune Metro Phase 2: Good News for Pune, Two New Metro Routes Approved
In a significant boost to Pune’s urban transport infrastructure, the Maharashtra government has approved the long-awaited Phase 2 of the Pune Metro project. The announcement was made during the state cabinet meeting held on Monday, marking a pivotal moment for the city’s growing public transportation network. Pune Metro Phase 2 will cover a total of 31.64 km and includes two major routes: Khadakwasla to Kharadi via Swargate and Hadapsar, and Nal Stop to Warje via Manik Baug.
Detailed Route Information and Costs
The Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi route is a 25.518 km stretch, with 22 metro stations planned along the way. The estimated cost for this section is ₹8,131.81 crore. This elevated route will pass through key areas such as Swargate, Hadapsar, and Kharadi, providing much-needed relief from the current traffic congestion on major roads like Sinhagad, Karve, and Solapur Road. Additionally, the Nal Stop-Warje-Manik Baug route, spanning 6.118 km with 6 stations, will cost ₹1,765.38 crore.

Once the Centre’s approval is granted, the project will commence, significantly boosting the public transport infrastructure in Pune. The total cost for Phase 2 is pegged at ₹9,897.19 crore, covering all 28 stations on the 31.64 km stretch.
Benefits of the New Metro Lines
Speaking about the development, Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), highlighted the benefits these new routes will bring to Pune residents. “There is a lot of traffic congestion on Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and Solapur Road at present. These metro lines will play a vital role in reducing congestion and offer faster, safer travel options to key destinations like Pimpri-Chinchwad, Ramwadi, Vanaz, and Swargate,” Hardikar said.
The approval of these metro routes aims to decongest some of Pune’s busiest roads, offering a reliable and efficient public transport option for daily commuters. The fully elevated nature of these routes will minimize disruptions during construction and allow for faster implementation.
Political Support and Further Metro Network Expansion
The project has also received enthusiastic backing from local representatives. Pune Member of Parliament Muralidhar Mohal praised the decision, stating, “The approval of the Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi and Nal Stop-Warje-Manik Baug metro lines by the Mahayuti government in the cabinet meeting is a positive step. This will further strengthen Pune’s metro network and significantly improve public transportation across the city.”
With these new routes in place, the Pune Metro network will be more comprehensive, connecting key residential and commercial areas. This approval is expected to further enhance the quality of life for Pune’s residents by reducing travel time and providing a modern, reliable alternative to road travel.
