Two Children Test Positive for HMPV in Nagpur, India’s Total Rises to Seven
Rising HMPV cases spark alert in Maharashtra; health department urges precautions

Nagpur Confirms Two HMPV Cases, India’s Tally Hits Seven
In a significant development amid rising concerns over respiratory illnesses, two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been confirmed in Nagpur, Maharashtra, increasing the total number of cases in India to seven. The patients, a seven-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, were tested positive at a private hospital, sparking renewed attention on the virus’s spread and potential public health implications.
Details of the Nagpur Cases
According to reports, the two children exhibited symptoms of cough and fever but did not require hospitalization. Both have since recovered from their illnesses. These cases were initially confirmed through private laboratory tests at Meditrina Hospital in Nagpur. However, as per protocol, further testing will be conducted at Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-affiliated laboratories at AIIMS for confirmation, including genomic sequencing at government facilities to validate the diagnosis.
HMPV in India: A Growing Concern
The emergence of HMPV cases in Nagpur adds to a growing list of infections across India. Previously, two cases each were reported from Bengaluru and Tamil Nadu, with one case detected in Ahmedabad involving a two-month-old infant. The virus, known for causing severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), particularly in children and immunocompromised individuals, has prompted health officials to heighten surveillance and preventive measures.
Health Department Response and Public Advisory
The Maharashtra health department is on high alert following the detection of the new cases. Authorities have advised individuals experiencing symptoms like persistent cough, fever, or other respiratory issues to exercise caution. The department is expected to release comprehensive guidelines soon to inform the public about preventive steps and strategies to mitigate the spread of HMPV.
“We urge the public to remain calm and follow standard health precautions,” said an official from the health ministry. “Timely testing and adherence to safety measures will be crucial in controlling the virus’s spread.”
What is HMPV?
Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family, which also includes viruses like RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus). It typically spreads through respiratory droplets and can cause symptoms ranging from mild cold-like effects to severe respiratory conditions, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
Public Safety Recommendations
- Maintain Hygiene: Frequent hand washing with soap and use of alcohol-based sanitizers.
- Avoid Close Contact: Limit interactions with individuals exhibiting respiratory symptoms.
- Use Masks: In crowded places or during illness to prevent droplet transmission.
- Seek Medical Advice: If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider.
